With the considerable speed at which India is urbanizing and the problems coming along with that, including- traffic/ pollution/ shoddy infrastructure, sustainable urban development is a crucial concern. To achieve sustainable urban development in India, the following important efforts and steps have been taken:

Smart City Missions: Developing 100 smart cities in India is the goal of the Smart Cities Mission, which was introduced in 2015. In order to enhance resident quality of life and advance sustainable urban development, the mission is heavily reliant on the utilization of technology and data.

Green Buildings: The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) encourages the construction of environmentally friendly structures that employ sustainable building materials and are water and energy efficient. A number of green building rating systems, including the LEED India rating system, have been created by the council.

Public Transportation: To lessen traffic and pollution in cities, the government is encouraging people to use public transportation. The National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP) and Bus Rapid Transit Systems (BRTS) are two initiatives that strive to promote sustainable transportation.

Waste Management: The Swachh Bharat Mission strives to enhance sanitation and waste management in urban areas. Waste segregation, recycling, and composting are just a few of the sustainable waste management techniques that the mission advocates for.

Green Spaces: To enhance the quality of life for city dwellers and to advance biodiversity, the government is encouraging the creation of green spaces. Greenbelts, parks, and playgrounds can all be built thanks to programms like the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).

Water Management: To preserve water resources and guarantee a sufficient water supply in cities, the government is pushing sustainable water management techniques like rainwater collection.
